Vertical Compute raises seed investment round to tackle AI chips’ memory bottleneck.

We are very proud to announce the successful €20M seed investment round of Vertical Compute, a pioneering European deeptech startup focused on developing game-changing vertically integrated memory technology. The round marks one of the largest seed rounds ever made for a Belgian start-up.

Going vertical, the path to 100X gains

The rapid advancements in large language models and generative AI are transforming virtually all industries at an unprecedented pace. But their reliance on complex cloud infrastructure and high-bandwidth memories introduces significant challenges. These models face bottlenecks due to the "memory wall," where current memory technologies, such as SRAM and DRAM, struggle to balance speed, density, cost, and energy efficiency. The scaling limitations of these technologies hinder their ability to keep pace with the demands of AI workloads.

Vertical Compute is successfully addressing this challenge by going vertical. Their innovative approach integrates vertical data lanes directly above computation units. This breakthrough drastically reduces data transfer distances from centimeters to nanometers. It has the potential to outperform DRAM in terms of density, cost and energy.
